Battle & Canterbury Photos

DSC08223.JPG

The spiral stairs at the George Hotel in Battle.

P7090007.JPG

The field where William the Conqueror's troops were arrayed.

P7090023.JPG

This is a view from the bottom of the hill, looking back up at the abbey. The abbey sits on the spot where the Saxons had their troops.

P7090012.JPG

This plaque marks the spot where Harold was slain. In the first Abbey church, this was near the high altar.

P7090013.JPG

Ox taking a photo of the plaque.

P7090015.JPG

This is a shot sideways along the hilltop at Hastings' field.

P7090011.JPG

This shot is from inside the abbey, but it shows you the grade of the slope nicely.

P7090018.JPG

This is looking down the hill.

DSC08245.JPG

This also shows the slope of that hill pretty well. It's steeper when you are walking up it.

P7090017.JPG

And another shot to show it off.

P7090024.JPG

And another looking uphill.

P7090034.JPG

We were wondering how similar it would be. The hill would be there, but what about trees? The marshy area on one side?

DSC08335.JPG

Pretty flowers on the trail back up the hill.

P7090037.JPG

Spot where Thomas Becket was murdered.

P7090043.JPG

A lit candle where his tomb used to be.

P7090045.JPG

A sign saying that the shrine to Becket was destroyed by Henry VIII

P7090041.JPG

Edward Plantagenent (Black Prince of Wales.)

P7090048.JPG

His "achievement" that was displayed in his funeral procession and on his tomb. (These are replicas above his tomb.)

DSC08378.JPG

These are the actual garments that were used in the procession and were on the tomb.

Stained glass at Canterbury

DSC08423.JPG

A 13th century window that has the story of Christ's life in the middle with supporting stories from the old testament in the left and right windows. (Bottom few rows are not in their original places. Two windows were combined to get one whole one when they were being repaired.)

DSC08444.JPG

The never ending corridor in Canterbury.

DSC08496.JPG

Stained glass of Henry VIII???

DSC08228.JPG

Ox thought we should put this in for Owen. It's a pub near the battle field in the town of Battle.
