Glastonbury & Salisbury Cathedral

P7070039.JPG

The ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. It was built in the 12th-15th century on the ruins of a previous abbey church.

P7070021.JPG

Only the sky provides color for these stained glass windows.

P7070015.JPG

Sacred Thorn Tree, said to be a descendent of the one that miraculously grew out of Joseph of Arimathea's Staff.

P7070026.JPG

The Abbot's Kitchen.

P7070028.JPG

The roof of the kitchen. The outer vents and the inner circle are separate. That allows heat from the kitchen to crawl up the sides of the roof and be channeled out the side vents. The center hole allows cooler air from outside to drop down in to the kitchen.

P7070030.JPG

Isn't this just a splendid kitchen?

P7070031.JPG

A reenactor with herbs and foods.

P7070032.JPG

The bread oven was in one corner, and two giant spit fireplaces were in two other corners. Each of them had it's own vent shaft above it.

P7070034.JPG

One of the vent shafts to carry the smoke away.

P7070035.JPG

This is the fourth corner. A shallow trough in the floor leads to this drainage system. (In a pinch all four corners could be used as spits.)

P7070049.JPG

A glimpse through the gate in the hedge to the Abbey's herb garden.

P7070041.JPG

The final resting place of the tomb of King Arthur. This spot is a few feet in front of the High Altar.

P7070053.JPG

This was the original spot of the tomb of Arthur. Originally on the south side of the west side of the "Old Church".

P7070055.JPG

The bakery we got lunch at. The name is amusing.

P7070059.JPG

Stained glass window of Joseph of Arimathea. (Modern glass, but very pretty).

P7070060.JPG

The sign outside of St. John's in Glastonbury. The church that had the stained glass window of Joseph.

P7070065.JPG

A Yew tree at Chalice Garden.

P7070068.JPG

The drinking spigot at Chalice Garden filling up my new bought cup.

P7070071.JPG

The actual Chalice Well. (It's really a spring.) Lovely lid isn't it?

P7070018.JPG

The Abbey barn.

P7070003.JPG

The inside of the barn. (Yikes, most of our houses aren't this nice!)

P7070010.JPG

A woven fence. I think these would be really spiff for hiding unsightly stuff at SCA events. It looks "right" and yet is light and cheap.

P7070025.JPG

A duck rummaging in the compost heap at the Abbey barn.

P7070027.JPG

Salisbury Cathedral. How can you tell it's a cathedral? It's covered in scaffolding where they are making repairs.

P7070029.JPG

West entrance

P7070032.JPG

A view straight on from the back.

P7070033.JPG

The Earl of Salisbury's Tomb.

P7080041.JPG

A pretty detail from the central cloister area of the Cathedral.

P7080044.JPG

Okay, here's my next quiz. Who in the SCA does this look like?
